Nex started with Progress in August 2018 and had a keen interest in video game design and was placed on a Creative Media & Games Design Pathway course.

Nex had excellent attendance and punctuality and his attitude towards lessons was outstanding, taking part in all tasks that were set to him.

During his course, Nex designed concepts for his own Video Games, created his own characters and also
discussed and designed some aspects to how the gameplay would work in this game.

In November 2018 as part of his work experience, Nex went to the Princes Trust and joined on their “Get Started with Gaming” course. The course lasted a week with the intent that at the end each student would get a chance to be chosen to work at Sony as a Games Tester. On the course, students would work in teams to design their own games and get help from Sony employees.

At the end of the course at Princes Trust, Nex was chosen to work at Sony on a month-long placement as a Games Tester, with the possibility of being invited back again in the future on a full-time employment position.

Nex successfully achieved on his Creative Media & Games Design Pathway programme with us.

We are very proud of Nex and wish him all the best in his placement at Sony.

Joel started with Progress in August 2016 at our Sefton Centre looking for employment. Whilst looking for employment Joel wanted to complete his Sports course. As a result of this, his tutor placed him on a 14 week Sports Level 2 qualification as well as work on his employability skills.

After 5 weeks on his Sports course, Joel was gaining more confidence and improving his knowledge in Sports and Coaching. Joel had excellent attendance and timekeeping and on a weekly basis, his tutor would do 1-1 support with him aimed at improving his CV and job capability.

Throughout lessons, Joel was always asking and answering questions correctly and confidently. He always enjoyed taking part in all activities. Joel would occasionally deliver practical sessions to the other students and came up with some very good ideas and implemented them into warm-ups and main sessions.

Joel came to the end of his sports certificate and progressed on to his diploma qualification with Progress Sports. During his time on the diploma, he learnt things such as how to plan and deliver a sports event effectively. This helped him with enhancing his skills in responsibility and authority.

Joel progressed onto BTEC level 3 in Sports Coaching in summer 2017. Joel successfully completed his first year on the course improving social skills such as confidence, knowledge and communication.

Joel began his second year but into his second week of the course, we managed to find him employment as a P.A at a bar in a busy part of the city centre.

After a couple of phone calls, Joel seems to enjoy it and has now been promoted to barman.

We wish Joel all the best in his employment.

Gemma started with us in 2017, she had a keen interest in gym and fitness and wanted to become a personal trainer. Gemma started on the level 2 exercise and fitness qualification and then progressed on to a Level 3 PT course in January 2018. Gemma excelled on the course, her attendance and attitude to work was excellent throughout the programme.

In March this year her tutor Deon and herself started to contact local gyms looking to gain experience or employment alongside her qualification. Pure Gym in Warrington replied back to her and offered her an interview. The interview went really well and Gemma was told to pass her level 3 and keep in contact as there would be an opportunity of employment at the end of her course. Gemma developed her industry experience by delivering one to one PT sessions to her peers and delivering circuit classes to her group of learners.

In June this year Gemma had her second interview with Pure Gym and part of the interview process was to deliver a 45 minute long one to one session to the Pure Gym manager we are so pleased that Gemma passed the interview and will start her new job as a PT in Pure Gym in July.

We wish Gemma all the best in her new employment.

The thought of writing a CV can be quite daunting: you’re sat in front of a blank piece of A4 paper which is waiting for you to type down all […]

The thought of writing a CV can be quite daunting: you’re sat in front of a blank piece of A4 paper which is waiting for you to type down all your life’s achievements to date.. Sounds hard right? It doesn’t have to be!

CVs should never follow a specific format, but here’s some items you should always include:

Personal details: It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to include their name, email, contact phone number and address. To avoid any awkward moments, make sure you’ve created a professional email, as using your “EliteHeadShot1337@Hotmail.com” or “xxXLFC4EVAXxx@hotmail.com” email address will make employers skip your CV.

Profile: Placed at the beginning of the CV, a profile is a statement that highlights your key attributes or reasons for deciding to apply for a specific field of work. It must focus on the sector you’re applying to, as your cover letter will be job-specific. You should keep it short and snappy – 100 words is the perfect length.

Work experience: This section should include all of your relevant work experience, listed with the most recent first. Include your job title, the name of the organisation, time in post, and your key responsibilities.

Education: Your educational experience and achievements should be listed here, along with dates, the type of qualification and/or the grade you achieved. However for example, if you have more educational achievements than work experience, placing an emphasis on this section is a good idea.

Hobbies and interests: You don’t always need to include hobbies and interests in your CV, but mentioning relevant ones to the position you’re applying for could back up your skills and help you to stand out from the crowd – not to mention give you something to talk about at an interview!

• Don’t use a font like “Comic Sans” instead, use size-10 Arial.

• Never fold your CV, always print it double-sided if it’s across two pages.

• Avoid using generic phrases such as “Team Player” “Hardworking” and “Multi-tasker”.

• Don’t go into a job interview without researching the company first!

• NEVER lie on your CV! As it demonstrates dishonesty to the employer.

• NEVER send off your CV without at least spell checking it first.
